Must See/Read works

Post by Prak »

So, as people have mentioned, my must see list sucks (though I did point out they're not "must see" so much as "should watch so I know what the fuck my friends are talking about. I'm left with the conclusion that my friends had shitty taste in movies when they were kids.)

So what movies or books do you think are essential nerd fare?
Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

To Watch:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

That animated Hobbit movie.

Pick any three Mel Brooks comedies.

Star Wars.

You are required to know that Captain Kirk came first, that Captain Picard is awesome, and that Klignons have forehead ridges, if you know nothing else about Star Trek.

Dragonball Z (Dragonball is optional extra credit) is a must.
At least one season of Sailor Moon

Some other lesser-known anime is worth some points (Mine is Yu Yu Hakusho)

You must have watched something by Joss Whedon, it seems.

To read (other than Lord of the Rings):

H.P. Lovecraft. Call of Cthulhu is mandatory, with at least two others (Such as Dunwich Horror and the Whisperer in Darkness).

Read at least a group of books by R.A. Salvatore, David Eddings, Robert Jordan (you don't have to have read the whole thing. Three of them will do), or whoever it was that wrote Elric. Insert out 70's-90's fantasy or sci-fi authors here, as well.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Read a Star War Extended Universe novel (I recommend the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. It's actually worth reading).

And, I think, Dune.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

On the reading, I'll have to look into some of that. Though my opinion on Dune is roughly the same as Dragonball.

The live action DragonBall movie is close to Mortal Kombat, and gets you a small idea of what goes on, so you might be able to skate by ont hat.

I would also add a version of the Dead Ale Wives bit about D&D "i attack the darkness"

You also should watch something by Rankin/Bass other than just the animated Hobbit.

animated how the grinch stole christmas

Willow would be good...

Animal Farm is a good one to read if you didnt already in school, along with Lord of the Flies

Play the game, not the rules.

Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones et al) by George R. R. Martin, though give him another decade or so to complete the other two books so you're not stuck at a cliffhanger for years like the rest of us.

You must be able to quote a minimum of 50% of the Princess Bride, AND you must know the the diff between the movie and the book.

Spaceballs.
Goonies.

Books:
Anything by Stephen Brust
Anything by Heinlein
The first 3 Foundation books (if you can book 2 was.. ugh pain)

song of Ice and Fire is painful crap.. but some weirdos seem to like it :)

As a person who watched anime but is clearly not an anime fan, there is a short list of things I think non-anime fans should watch:

Ghost in the Shell(the movie mostly, but the series is also really good)
Ninja Scroll
Akira
Full-Metal Alchemist(just some... the whole series is too much).

Other animation:

Venture Brothers
Afro-samurai

Transformers - The Movie. You need to know why people hate Hot Rod.
Macross - Do you remember love. To see where the Unseen are from.
Discworld. Pick any of the Novels featuring Death, Unseen Academy, or the Nightwatch.
Tron. Seriously.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

I should have specified

"The FIRST Dune only."

So, he's normally a hack writer of pain, but
On a Pale Horse,
Wielding an Hour Glass

are actually amazingly good books.
The others are mediocre to bad, but those two are amazingly good.

hmm..

The old Who's on first routine by Abbot and Costello.

A somewhat retro nerd on the internet, you should know who the base belongs to?

Contra, Donkey Kong, Chrono Trigger, and FF 4 & 7.

I did an acting class where I and a partner did Who's On First as a pair of drug addicts. It went over really well.

The Hunger Games (Book)
Braveheart (Movie)
The Bartimaeus Trilogy (Books, three of them)
Dave (Movie)
Rat Race (Movie)
and The Gamers (Movie). The sequal isn't necessary, but the first is a must.

Wait, "Rat race?

That is some awesome bullshit.

Watch "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad, Mad worrld" instead. The two are similar but I have no idea why someone would want to watch "Rat race." It's a piece of shit.

ALso these movies.

2001: A space odyssey

Soylent Green

Dr Strangelove

Dark Crystal

Legend (maybe...)

I'm not sure how funny DBZ Abridged is to people who never watched the show (as a nine year old or otherwise), but it should also get you all the necessary nerd-cred you need. Playing one of the Tenkaichi games might also work.

Silent Film: Metropolis, Nosferatu, Call of Cthulhu, possibly things like Le Sang d'un Poète. Many silent films are improved by replacing the music and amusing oneself at inadvertent coincidences.

If you can hang with the pacing, I thought Solaris was great, and a good introduction to both Lem and Tarkovsky. A pretty seminal Russian scifi book to check out as well is We by Zamyatin, although the whole Soviet dystopian genre is pretty engaging.

Read something by Stephenson and Gibson, most commonly Snow Crash and Neuromancer. Dune, as suggested earlier, is rather good, but anything after the first book, and definitely after the third, is not worth it. Syfy made a surprisingly good mini series of this, which was far superior to David Lynch's take.

My friend group generally dismisses anime, but have got some quotable lines from Squidbillies. The Venture Brothers is a must.

I wouldn't even know where to start with comics. Having grown up reading 20 year old Silver Age Marvel, I might be biased as to what's noteworthy. Vertigo is likely the imprint with the best stories, and most superhero basics can really be gleaned from cartoons and movies at this point.

I don't normally classify anything as "must see/read", because tastes vary so much...but I do believe anyone who lives in America should read "To Kill a Mockingbird", because it is that good.
I am judging the philosophies and decisions you have presented in this thread. The ones I have seen look bad, and also appear to be the fruit of a poisonous tree that has produced only madness and will continue to produce only madness.

believe in one hand and shit in the other and see which ones fills up quicker. it will be the one you are full of, shit.

I read the original request as "Baseline nerd culture" So you can know what other people are talking about.

That colored a lot of my list. That, or the original producers of common ideas--like Neuromancer, yes.
